Choosing the Perfect Credit Card
There is really no such thing as the perfect credit card, just the best one for your needs. Since everybody will have different needs the right card will be different for each person. That being said there are some important factors that you will need to consider when choosing a credit card.
In the vast majority of case the perfect credit card will be the one that has the lowest possible interest rate. Interest on a credit card is normally very high and the lower the rate the less it will cost you in the long run. Even a reduction of just a couple of percentage points on the interest rate can save you a huge amount of money. There can be a huge variation from one card to another when it comes to the interest rate so it definitely pays to shop around to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible.
You do have to be careful when you are shopping for the lowest interest rate on your credit card. The credit card companies will often try to entice you with a low introductory rate. This can be a great way to save some money, especially if you are going to transfer your outstanding balance to the new card. However you have to make sure that you find out what the regular rate will be after the introductory offer expires. If this turns out to be higher than the rate you can get on another card it may not be worth taking the one with low introductory rate.
When choosing credit cards you will also want to look at any fees that come with the card. In some cases there will be a monthly fee and in others there won’t be. Ideally you would pick the card that has no fees however if you can get a card that has a lower interest rate it may be worthwhile to pay a monthly fee, as long as it isn’t too big. Of course this may not be true if you never carry a balance on your card. You are going to have to realistically assess whether or not you will carry a balance on your credit card.
These days a lot of cards come with an awards program. Air miles are the most common but there are a variety of other options available. These can be an important factor in choosing a credit card. However you shouldn’t pick a card based primarily on the rewards program. If you can get an interest rate that is the same as you can get with another card with your rewards card then by all means take advantage of it. But you should never take a card with a higher interest rate just because it offers a rewards program. The extra costs will almost certainly cost you more than you gain in rewards.
